Project presentation

Reaching optimising control, management and flexibility of the future network infrastructures requires actions to retrieve a good understanding of network and application behaviour. In previous EU-funded FP6 projects like EVERGROW and LOBSTER, large efforts have been taken to successfully develop and deploy measurement infrastructures to gain insight into the operational network, without being intrusive from the perspective of commercial ISPs. Meta-repositories like MOME were dedicated to keep an overview on available measurement data, tools, infrastructures and projects.

The Telecommunications, Networks and Services (TNS) research group from UPNA was a partner on FP6 Integrated Project EVERGROW. In EVERGROW, TNS contributed with the development, management and maintenance of the Central Management System (CMS) for ETOMIC, the European Traffic Observatory Measurement Infraestructure. In collaboration with Collegium Budapest, ETOMIC controlls more than a dozen monitoring nodes across Europe. These nodes include DAG cards with specific high precision time-stamping features developed exclusively for ETOMIC. A GPS receiver connected to every node offers time information which allows for unique synchronized measurements. For example, one-way-measurements are only possible using this kind of synchronized platforms. Other experiments that have been run on ETOMIC include router congestion discovery, load balancing in the european research network and packet train measurements for router queue analysis or link bandwidth evaluation.

Using the ETOMIC platform, a set of periodic measurements is continuously being collected. These measurements are available using the ETOMIC Public Repository, algo managed by the TMS group.

The main objective of the EU-funded FP7 Project MOMENT is to design and implement a mediator architecture offering a unified interface for all the measurement services available not only from these previous FP6 projects but also from any other platform that wishes to join efforts with MOMENT. For this task we keep close work with CAIDA. The system will include both active and passive monitoring and measurement services. A Web Services interface will be offered for the applications and they will be able to query the mediator with semantic queries. This means that the mediator will use a measurement-specific ontology, alowing semantic representation and retrival of measurement and monitoring information. Finaly, the system will be non-intrusive from the perspective of commercial ISPs and it will protect the privacy of end-users.

During MOMENT, the TNS research group from UPNA will continue his collaborative researchin network measurement infrastructures. We will work specially in the tasks of:
